In celebrating Carnival 2009, we the people of Marigot, congratulate our own Lord Karessah who has been crowned Dominica’s 2009 Calypso Monarch. To Greg, I want to say thank you for giving us hope once again. Your talent, charm, patience and determination has finally paid off. I know that there is someone very special who is proudly looking down at you, as you celebrate such a victorious moment. We wish you continued success with your singing career.
Let us continue to uphold the richness of our village as we begin the process of organizing our people to be performers in the 2010 Carnival competitions. By beginning the process early, we can select and train our young men and women who are willing to compete. With adequate time to prepare, the contestants will become more articulate when answering questions as well as be more confident when showing their individual talents. With the use of the internet, we can also seek appropriate sponsorship in order to help them compete fairly. As a result of being better prepared, our chosen contestants should once again be able to perform at a level which would qualify them to compete with other top contestants in Roseau, during the final competitions.
Marigot is full of talented people such as, musicians, singers, dancers, actors, athletes, and much more, but most of those talents remain hidden. Let us begin by having more open discussions as well as more local competitions. We also need leaders who are willing to come forward and train the people who are eager to participate in such competitions. Classique International is committed to playing a vital role in the 2010 Carnival competitions in our community.
Greg really did us proud! Most of us know this has been a long time in comming and I must say that I admire his tenacity and true love for the art form. Way to go Greg!!
Greg’s win has certainly given me hope that we in Marigot, are still capable of producing the brightest and the best. My plan is to get involved with Greg, as well as others in the community, to use this victory as a stepping-stone to the rise of a new cultural era in our community. I do hope that parents will be more receptive to the idea of encouraging and allowing their children to participate in cultural activities. Early and effective planning will be the key to being prepared to compete against the other contestants in Roseau. We should once again host our own calypso show, queen show, and princess show, for the 2010 Carnival season. We have to keep in mind that Carnival is earlier next year, so we must move quickly. I look forward to committing my time and talent, to this new cultural awakening in Marigot.

A victory celebration for Greg was wonderful and fully warranted because he is one of Dominica’s best vocalist and his persevarance finally paid off. We are very fortunate to have such an ambitious young man in our community. My hope is that Greg’s win will not signal the red light of complacency for others, but rather a green light to help us keep moving forward towards a brighter future for Marigot and Dominica as a whole.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Thanks for your comment and I must say that the response from most people have been very positive. I have just returned from Dominica where I had a wonderful time hosting several parties for adults as well as children. My intention was to travel throughout the village taking photos of places in Marigot and writing about them but I got so caught up in all the May fest activities that I was unable to do so. However, that remains part of my plan because I know that there are several people who would love to revisit familiar places in Marigot so it would be great to see some places on line. I was quite happy to see that the MDC managed to turn the May fest weekend into an Island wide event which was well attended by Marigotians as well as other villagers. I look forward to being a participant in next year’s event and hope that more Dominicans, especially Marigotians will be encouraged to attend. Plans for next year are already in the works and the functions are expected to be better organized than this year’s. I hope to receive and post some of the photos later this month. By the way, your brother is one of Classique International’s biggest fan because he is present at all the affairs.
