For most adults, reading and writing are basic skills which, were acquired in our early years; however, there are many adults within our communities who are struggling to read and write simple sentences. Not being able to read and write carries a stigma; as such, many people are embarrassed to admit that they fit the profile. Unfortunately, some people who are unable to read and write live in silence while going through the process, others are literally handicapped by their lack of ability to read and write. In many cases, signing documents without reading or understanding the contents, or just simply avoiding situations that requires reading, for example. Sometimes the consequences can be dangerous, costly, and even deadly when mistakes which, could have been avoided, are sometimes the result of the inadequacy to read and write.
Education to many, is being proud to have acquired several degrees and moved up the educational ladder of success. There are exceptions to the rule; however, when some among us are willing to take the time to help others realize their potential. There are numerous adults among us who would just love to be able to read and write simple sentences, but lack the help and necessary tools to do so. Who are most of those adults? They are our best sports figures, our musicians, and our own relatives and friends. This is one of the reasons why it is very important and would make a big difference, if we could lend our support. Let us teach others to read “one word at a time” so they can slowly grasp the concept of effectively reading and writing simple sentences, or be able to recognize the most familiar words which, are needed to get along in today’s society. We must engage adults who are willing to learn and challenge them to learn “one word at a time” in a very deliberate way, yet effective enough so that they will be empowered, by the ability to read. Telling adults they should learn to read, without helping them to read, is like using a fishing rod minus the bait needed to attract the fish that you are hoping to catch.
For those adults who are interested in participating in this program, the ultimate goal will be their ability to effectively read, write, spell, and understand basic words, as well as write simple sentences. In teaching “one word at a time” we will think of creative ways that will make the process interesting and enjoyable, instead of tedious and boring. There is certainly a great need for basic adult education among men and women in our communities; just a little help will go along way in aiding adults, who will be responsible for helping others, especially their children, avoid the same pitfalls.
