Better Roads in Dominica – Prospect of Increased Economic Growth
Feb 26th
We are finally experiencing the anticipated rehabilitation of roads from Roseau to the Melville Hall Airport, and from Roseau to Portsmouth. Fast and furious was the groundbreaking event, which took place today, with the immediate commencement of work on the Portsmouth road. According to (DNO), the work will be conducted by a Chinese team, but several Dominicans are expected to be employed. This $100 million project is a great economic boost for the island as a whole. The project is expected to last almost two years…. that will certainly be a good, steady period of employment for those Dominicans who have been employed, to assist with the Portsmouth project.
Development of the island is well on its way, and we look forward to the safe and continued efforts of those who are involved in the process, to see these many projects come to fruition. We are all anxious to see Dominica move up to standards with other developing islands, especially in the areas of safe and accessible roads, better paying jobs and increased economic growth. The standard of living has improved over the many years; therefore, news of continued development is very encouraging to those who are willing to remain on the island, or return to the island to live and participate in the forward movements of our nature island.
Better roads as well as additional roads are necessary, but emphasis must be placed on providing proper drainage, because the island is prone to a lot of heavy rainfalls and frequent landslides, as well as ocassional sea erosions, which are usually very destructive to the roads. The Chinese builders are professionals, who we trust, will not take shortcuts, but will create the best and most durable roads, suitable to our tropical climate and eminent storms. Ultimately, proper road maintenance by officials as well as travelers, will also be necessary to ensure the safety and longevity of the roads, after they have been constructed.
I am thankful that we are finally building better roads, which will lead to improvement in our traveling time, encourage more visitors to extend their stay on the island, increase business development, and create stronger economic growth, while our lovely, nature island continues to improve and become more globally recognized.

Jaheil hopes to reconnect with his brother sometime in the near future; when they do, Jaheil plans to express his feelings of growing up without his younger brother (about 2 months old, 7-year-old Jaheil) and will show him these happy and memorable photographs, of the day they were unexpectedly and quickly, separated from each other.
Carnival 2011 Preparation in Motion – Help us Keep Marigot on the Map
Feb 20th
The artistic, impressive and memorable achievements of Lord Karessah (Greg), and Soul Puss (Dave), determinedly remind us, that the people of Marigot are very intelligent, talented and motivated. It is this relentless motivation which will triumphantly return, and keep Marigot, in its appropriate and cultural place on the map. Ultimately, our goal is to have a beauty contestant from the village of Marigot, compete in the Ms. Dominica competition, in Roseau, possibly for 2011 Carnival.
- Lord Karessah Retains Crown (2nd time)
- Soul Puss, Third Place Win (on right)
- Children’s Party at Classique International
- Cheryl (Lady “C”) – Working to Return Beauty Pageant to Marigot
- Ms. Dominica (Portsmouth)
- Potential Princess Contestants – Party at Classique
I am planning to work along with Cheryl Abraham and others, to facilitate the process. Auditions will begin in May. Parents will be notified of the selection process of boys and girls, who are serious and willing to participate in 2011 Carnival activities. Children will be selected for the following events: calypso show, princess show. They will also be invited to join in one of our costume bands for the Kiddies’ Carnival, on Carnival Sunday afternoon. It is very important to begin the selection process early, so that all contestants can be professionally trained, and ready to compete in the pageant shows.
A queen show and calypso show will also be considered, for Carnival 2011.
Hosting our own pageant and calypso shows in Marigot, will increase self esteem, create pride and joy in our village, while contestants showcase their talent, confidence, and intelligence as they compete to win and keep Marigot on the map.
We are determined to return beauty pageants and calypso shows to Marigot; however, we can only be successful with the cooperation of those who would also like to see the beauty and elegance of the village showcased, positively, culturally and internationally. If you and your friends would like to see the return of beauty pageants and calypso shows to the lovely village of Marigot, for the 2011 Carnival celebrations, please support the effort by encouraging others to join the “TEAM” by making an early and serious commitment to the cause, because, “Together Everyone Achieves More,” the results will be significantly greater — recognition undeniable — a big plus for Marigot.
Additional information will be posted as we work through the planning process.
A “Brilliant and Fiery Sunset,” Lingers Over the Potomac River, in Washington
Feb 16th
- Sunset over the Potomac River View #1.
- Sunset over the Potomac River View #2.
- Sunset Over the Potomac River View #3.
These are beautiful photographs of an evening’s brilliant and fiery sunset, as it lingers over the Potomac river, in Washington. Buildings on the other side of the river, are sceneries of Arlington, Virginia. A very welcome and refreshing sight, after such snowy and wintry weather, over the past two weeks. As expected, the river is free of snow, has regained its emerald color, as it flows swiftly and sparkly towards the city. Although the river bank is still covered in snow, that should soon disappear, providing there is an increase in temperature and there are no additional snow storms, in the next few days.
As the saying goes “when life gives you a lemon, you make lemonade.” Apparently, being stocked in my 10th floor apartment for almost two weeks, has automatically unleashed my photographic potentiality. Incidentally, this has helped me to maintain my sanity while making the best use of my time, because being in an enclosed environment for such long periods of time, can literally drive you up the walls. I yearn to return to the island where I can practically live out doors.
I excitedly drove my car for the first time today, enjoyed a lovely dinner with my niece, Zakiya, but was truly amazed to see the mounds of snow along the roadside. My main concern was returning home before nightfall when I could run into black ice which is very dangerous and deadly. As reported and seen on various television stations, many side roads are still blocked and will remain abandoned for several days, because there is absolutely no place to dump all that snow. Unfortunately, when it rains, there might be serious flooding all over the city as well as in many other states…… because most states are experiencing an abundance of snow mounds.
I hope you will enjoy looking at my photographs as much as I have enjoyed shooting them. Thanks to modern technology, I was able to use my cell phone camera to capture these picturesque sceneries of this fiery sunset, from my 10th floor balcony.

Thawing Out After The Blizzard of 2010
Feb 14th
- Snow melts away, sun shines brightly, Potomac River is Thawing out.
- Snow continues to melt. Swimming Pool and Potomac River are more visible.
- Potomac River free of snow. Pool and Garden more visible.
The snow is slowly melting away, the sun shines brightly and the Potomac River is running again. This is certainly a welcoming sight after all that snow, and being cooped up in my 10th floor apartment almost two weeks.
Oh no, more snow is in the forecast for Monday……. let’s hope it will not be too much.
A VERY WARM AND HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY TO ALL.
Karessah (Greg) Retains Calypso Monarch Crown, Soul Puss (Dave) Third, in 2010 Calypso Contest
Feb 14th

- Soul Puss (Dave) on the right.
Congratulations to Lord Karessah, Greg, for retaining the 2010 Calypso Monarch Crown. Also, congratulations to Soul Puss, Dave, for obtaining third place. You have both remain committed and worked extremely hard to be in the competition, so you are well deserving of your rewards.
Once again, this is real proof that Marigot has an abundance of ambitious, great, and talented young people. Let us work to continue this phenomenon which has begun. We need to encourage and begin working with other talented young people who are willing to compete. In the past, Marigot people hosted their own princess show, queen show and a calypso show, which was well coordinated and very successful. We must work very hard to return these competitions to Marigot, not only for the beauty of the competitions, but also the revenue which will be gained, as a result of these competitions. Become a team player, because, “Together Everyone Achieves More.”
Once again, sincere commitment, financial obligations, and early preparations, for example, will be the key to hosting successful competitions in Marigot. Let us come together to begin working towards these goals. Just imagine how lovely it would have been to be able to parade our Marigot princess, queen and king of the village, while celebrating the successful win of our own Lord KARESSAH, the 2010 Calypso Monarch, for retaining the most coveted CROWN, and SOUL PUSS, for his third place win.
Let us happily celebrate the wonderful achievements of Karessah and Soul Puss, whose determination, diligence and hard work have showcased the unique talent of the village, while the news have sky-rocketed Marigot positively into the Headlines. May their collective and successful accomplishments empower us all, while their undeniably talented aspirations, inspire all those who dare to “DREAM BIG.”
May the carnival celebrations continue in a very safe and enjoyable manner, free from drugs, crime and violence…… this is a time to have fun, not to harm each other, so please don’t feel obligated to walk with your tools. Why would you want to have anything in your possession, which could prevent you from jumping up and enjoying yourselves?
Way to go, MARIGOTIANS, get on the road, unite, and celebrate your big win, in grand style!

First Came the “Snow Storm” then Came the “BLIZZARD” of 2010
Feb 10th
- Snow around the swimming pool and tables.
- Snow on my doormat.
- Snow around my flower pots.
- Snow on the frozen Potomac River.
- Snow around waterfall and swimming pool.
- View from the Watergate. After the BLIZZARD.
Did I say SNOW, SNOW, and More SNOW? Well, little did I know, that was just the icing on the cake.
Must I say, this is truly a “BLIZZARD.” I have heard of, and seen pictures of a “BLIZZARD,” I have read of a “BLIZZARD,” but experiencing a real “BLIZZARD” is something you have to witness in order to truly understand the meaning of the word “BLIZZARD.” In my opinion, this is comparable to hurricane force winds filled with snow; if you can imagine a “White Hurricane,” with winds blowing at 60 miles per hour, snow swirling around covering everything in its path, light poles struggling to remain standing, while doors keep rattling with loud whistling sounds scary enough to make you shiver.
This time, looking out of my window, everything is white. There are no trees, buildings, roads, lights or the river to be seen. Everything is white; therefore, I can’t differentiate the sky from land. I am currently wearing my sun glasses, not to protect my eyes from the sunlight, but the whiteness which is extremely difficult on the eyes. I have been stock indoors for the past five days and I certainly appreciate the ability to use my computer, have access to a television, and being able to use my telephone. Fortunately, I don’t need to drive, because in the lower level of my building, I have easy access to the essential necessities, such as a supermarket, pharmacy, beauty shop, and other essential things. Although I live on the 10th floor, the wind blew so much snow on to my balcony that I could go skying, or build a snowman while throwing a few snow balls……. well, maybe not that much, but more than usual.
This “BLIZZARD” could not have occurred at a more wishful time in my life. No, not for the blizzard, but for the fact that I am stock here instead of on the beautiful island of Dominica. Oh how this makes me truly “Island Sick,” realizing that I could be enjoying the fun of carnival in warm, sunny, and festive Dominica. For the lucky ones who were fortunate enough to leave the USA before such a blizzard, have a safe and enjoyable carnival season. In the meantime, I will keep looking at photos, reading all about carnival, wishing that I were there in person, but realizing that life does not always yield the fruits we desire at the time we desire them. I look forward to next year’s carnival where my voice will be heard and my presence will be felt in more ways than one. While I would prefer to be in Dominica, I am satisfyingly proud to be part of this historical occurrence, the “BLIZZARD” of 2010, realizing this is the first such “BLIZZARD” in many years, and the possibility that I might not be privileged to experience another one.
In the US, it’s Snow, Snow, and More Snow, but in Dominica, it’s Carnival Time
Feb 3rd
Looking out of my window, trees covered in white, streets barely visible, while the river appears to have frozen in time; a very picturesque scenery just perfect for printing on Christmas postcards………..SNOW, SNOW, and more SNOW………..
Most of us are familiar with the saying “if wishes were horses beggars would ride.” My wish at this time is to be on the island of Dominica, looking at the SUN, SUN, and more SUN, while enjoying the 2010 carnival festivities.
What can I do to turn my wishes into reality? I can have DREAMS, DREAMS and more DREAMS.
The melodious sounds of carnival keeps ringing in my ears. The lively reggae beat, the jumping sound of calypso music, and the unstoppable beat of Sugar Fire drums, combined to make the carnival a time of joyous celebration. A wonderful display of bright and festive colors, worn by natives, as well as visitors, add to the dazzling and picturesque beauty of the carnival festivities. Whether you wear an elaborate costume or your comfortable clothes, you can walk, dance, swing from side to side or jump up and down, while you follow the lively music and have a splendid time…….. caring little about what others might think of your actions……. while you jubilantly celebrate in the true spirit of love.
When we leave our worries behind, let our spirits roam free over land and sea, we will enjoy the simple treasures of life, and live life to the fullest degree — for some people, a lot of snow is a welcome and thrilling sight, but for others like myself, a lot of sun, especially at carnival time, could be an irresistible, stimulating, and enjoyable time.
The Valentine’s Day Party at Classiqué, has been cancelled.
Feb 1st
classique general
Classiqué International has cancelled the Valentine’s Day party, which was scheduled for Saturday, February 13th, 2010. Unfortunately, this is also the carnival season and there are several events scheduled during the weekend, including performances by foreign artists, and several live bands, on the Weirs Court in Marigot. Most importantly, the calypso finals will also be held on February 13th, in Roseau.
Classiqué International is very sorry for the cancellation and apologizes for any inconveniences, which may have resulted from our decision to cancel the affair. To all our patrons, especially Cheryl, queen of Classiqué, I know you and your friends were looking forward to having a good time…… we promise to do something very special after the carnival season…… even a post-Valentine’s Day party, might be a good idea.
We wish all Dominicans and visitors on the Island, a very safe and enjoyable carnival celebration. Lord Karresah, we are routing for you, please keep the CROWN in Marigot.
