A Beautiful Summer Day in Washington

This is a beautiful summer day in Washington with lots of boats on the sparkling Potomac river.

Cakes for my Brothers

Most of us enjoy eating a nice slice of cake from time to time, and my brothers are no different. Hence my decision to make and mail these three cakes to my brothers in New York.  The decorations on the cakes might not look the same by the time the cakes arrive in New York, but ultimately, the taste is what really matters.

It’s Beginning to Look and Feel a Lot Like Summer

Wendy Davis, Ms. Atkinson, has been Crowned the 2010 May Fest Queen

These were the May Fest queen show contestants who were chosen from the villages of Atkinson, Marigot, Wesley, Woodford Hill, and Calibishe.  This year’s competition was the first to include beauty contestants from other villages.  A good move by the May Fest organizers and one which could potentially increase involvement by other villages.

May Fest Queen Contestants

The May Fest queen show was successfully hosted on Saturday, May 1st,  in spite of heavy rainfalls, early in the day.

Ms. Atkinson was crowned the 2010 May Fest queen.

Ms. Wesley, first runner up

Ms. Marigot, second runner up

Congratulations to the raining queen, Wendy Davis, Ms. Atkinson, and to all the other contestants for their positive contributions to the May Fest 2010 queen show and after party.

Congratulations to Mikey, Alex Bruno, and all those who worked so diligently to make the show a great success. We can proudly declare, Marigot has become the official place to celebrate the May Day holiday weekend. Way to go Marigot!

I will post photographs when they become available.

Come Join us at the May Fest 2010 Weekend Celebrations in Marigot, From April 30th – May 3rd

A very happy and safe May Fest weekend to everyone.  Best of luck with the queen show this evening.  I hope the decision to choose ladies from different villages as contestants in this year’s queen show, will yield greater results, by attracting more participants and allowing an exciting variation of cultural display.

The next best thing to being in Dominica during May Fest, is to receive great photographs of the many activities being held this weekend.

To DJ White Vest, DJ Red Vest, and other organizers of today’s event, I hope the Melville Hall River Bash has turned out the way you expected it to.  That should be a whole lot of fun….. in and out of the water…. keeping cool by the riverside, while listening and dancing to the best music in town. :-)

Completion of Eight Weeks of Cake Decorating Classes, Courses 1 and 2

Cake World and Cake Girls, move over, here comes Lena!  Ok, maybe not now, but later. :-)

This cake is real and edible.  It is a sour cream cake with pineapple and apricot filling, covered with butter cream frosting, and royal icing flowers.  Two oblong cakes were used for this project.

There is nothing mystical about cake decorating; however, you’ll need a good teacher, lots of patience, fairly steady hands, and a very keen eye.

This cake is evidence of my understanding of the many techniques taught during eight weeks of cake decorating classes. I have acquired many techniques which will better enhance my cake decorating skills. As you can see, my final project displays flowers, leaves, birds, basket weave and rope patterns… all incorporated into the decorating of this delightful looking cake.  The classes were enjoyable; working with a fun group of students and a great teacher, made my experience well worth the time spent together… acquiring new techniques and becoming a more confident cake decorator. I plan to make delicious cakes, nicely decorated, and irresistible to the eyes.

By the way, while in the classroom, decorations on the original cake looked much better, but traveling back home with the decorated cake was not the easiest thing to do; hence the nicks and dents on my beautiful cake.  Nonetheless, I am proud of the results of my efforts and feel thankful for the experiences gained, during my eight weeks of classes.

I will be taking course #3 to learn more techniques and further enhance my cake decorating skills.  The advanced classes will be offered sometime in June.

Practice Cake in Preparation for Final Cake Decorating Project

In preparation for my final cake decorating project today, I have made this sour cream cake filled with pineapple and apricot preserves.  In my opinion, and according to others who have eaten the cake, it is delicious; but, most importantly, making and decorating this cake, has given me the confidence I needed to proceed with my final project.  Basket weave is the last technique which will be taught today…. will be incorporated into my final project. Pictures of the cake to be posted upon completion.

Our Sincere Condolences go out to the Family of the late, Daisy Doram

Cherry Blossoms in Washington, DC, 2010

We would like to express our sincere condolences to the family of Ms. Daisy Doram, who passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010, in Brooklyn, NY.  Ms. Daisy who migrated to the United States of America several years ago, was originally from the village of Marigot in Dominica.

Ms. Daisy was a very close friend of our family and her presence will certainly be missed.  May her soul rest in peace.

The funeral services for Ms. Daisy Doram, will be held on Thursday, April 29th at 4:00 p.m., at the Flatlands Funeral Home in Brooklyn, New York.

I Can’t Believe It’s Already Here – Our Spectacular 4th Annual “MAY FEST” Blast (April 30 – May 3) Marigot, Dominica

May Fest 2010 is well on its way (April 30 – May 3, 2010), with plans for a fun filled May Day weekend in Marigot.  Last year’s May Fest was a blast and this year’s promises to be bigger and better.  As you can see from the posters, several events have been planned, and performers from around the island, as well as the foreign band, Krosfyah from Barbados, will be in attendance.

According to the president of Marigot Development Corporation, Michael Pascal, “Dominicans and visitors are invited to the Ecumenical Service, May Fest Queen Show, Monster May Challenge, International Artist Night, Grand J’ouvert, and Family Beach/River Day.”

Great move with changing the queen show to include contestants from other villages. This decision should greatly enhance participation in the annual May Fest celebration, by other villages, and Dominica as a whole.

May Fest is being hosted for the fourth consecutive year and is considered a family affair.  Marigot is certainly the place to be if you are looking for an action packed, May Day weekend.  Club DVD’s Dynamic Entertainment System will rock you back and forth with their continuous mix of dancing music and super DJs.  How you doing, DJ Mixer? I am sorry I can’t be in Dominica this year, because last year we had a blast at Classique International….. the place where a lovely after party was held….. very late into the morning hours.  I was looking forward to this year’s celebration and the chance to host an elegant and enjoyable affair.  Hopefully, next year I’ll be there with bells on my toes.

Marigot is the place to be on May Day weekend, for May Fest 2010.  Come for the fun, but be prepared for the non stop action and delicious food.  Don’t ask for j’ouvert morning jump up with the dynamic “Sugar Fire” steel band of Marigot.  I can assure you, you will have a hard time leaving Weirs flat to go home…. that is…. if you can remember how far away you have parked your vehicle.  Come early and expect to stay late, because the entire village will be in a party atmosphere for the entire weekend.

Alvin, look out for  my Classique crew…. I might not be there in person, but I’ll be there in spirit.  Good luck to Michael Pascal, Vena, musicians, vendors, and all the others who are working diligent to make this year’s May Fest celebrations a great success.  I also wish everyone a very safe and enjoyable May Fest 2010 weekend. :-)

BVI Airways to Begin Flying Directly From St. Maarten to Dominica

FLY….. BABY….. FLY :-)

BVI Airways Announces Ticket Sales

Just what we have been waiting for…. another Airline to help us arrive at our destinations in a timely manner.

According to DNO, “Tortola based BVI Airways has announced that final preparations have been completed and online ticket sales have begun via its reservations website, www.goBVI.com.  BVI Airways inaugural flight is scheduled for Wednesday, May 5.”

Flights between Tortola and Antigua on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Flights between Tortola and St. Maarten on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

Flights between Dominica and St. Maarten on Fridays and Sundays.

Most of us are familiar with the problems we experience flying back and forth to Dominica, having to overnight in Antigua, Puerto Rico or St. Maarten, due to airline availability or competition.

With 50 years of operational experience between BV Airways, Inc., founded in 2009, and BVI Corp. a leader in the caribbean, the hope is that these added flights to the caribbean will help alleviate some of the delays we often encounter, during our many travels to the islands.

While this is very exciting news to the ears, we will have the opportunity to better judge the results of BVI Airways’ performance, during our upcoming holiday events on the Island, especially the 2010 World Creole Festival, for example.

Photo compliments of DNO.
